Global Health Abroad

The Kwak SCholarship

John Michael (JM) Kwak was one of our EM residents at NYPQ from 2015-2017. JM passed away on August 29, 2017 after a long and courageous fight against melanoma.

JM remains one of our most beloved residents of all time. He made everyone feel as if you’d known each other all your lives and shared his passion for life with everyone. He made us all want to become better doctors.

JM grew up in many countries and believed there was strength in diversity. To honor his memory, the Kwak family established a fund that would alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with traveling abroad during residency and spread his passion for global health around the world.

Away Electives

Our residents have traveled the world - from Colombia to Myanmar, and from Norway to Peru- providing exposure to Simulation, Ultrasound, BLS and ACLS, and additionally supplying basic medical screenings and health literacy.
